St. Andrew's American Independence Celebration

Date(s): 2012-07-01 to 2012-07-01
(Organizer: St. Andrew's Church, Lisbon)

On Sunday July 1 at 11am, St Andrew’s Church, Lisbon will host a service to commemorate the Declaration of Independence of the USA. The Declaration was signed by only one clergyman, Scottish Presbyterian, Rev John Witherspoon, in 1776.

Details:

Inspired by President John Adam’s words, the day will be a great anniversary commemorated with “solemn acts of devotion to Almighty God”. The service will include the participation of Rev Dr Lee Corder, while the Bible texts will be interpreted in a theater piece written especially for the occasion. Dr Corder is a Navy veteran, an ordained Presbyterian pastor and a senior chaplain to the NFL’s Washington Redskins. Following the service, there will be a typical American family 4th of July BBQ, complete with potato salad, chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs and of course pies served in the gardens of St Andrew’s Church.

Rev Graham McGeoch said, “Over the last 2 years we have been working with and supporting the American community in Lisbon. The recent inauguration of the community art project by the Carlucci American International School in Lisbon and the American Embassy in the church gardens is a wonderful example of this collaboration. We look forward to welcoming all Americans to our backyard”.

St Andrew’s Church is a charge of the Church of Scotland, a partner church of the Presbyterian Church USA. It has been offering English-language worship in the Reformed tradition in Portugal since 1866. It is fully committed to ecumenical and inter-faith relations.
