Visit to Monte de Gramicha. This is the property of Henrique Gonçalves, who will be delighted to welcome us. During the Second siege of Badajoz, Wellington had his Headquarters there. Major Nick Hallidie, Chairman FBC, has written about this and a copy is available on the FBCE website: british-cemetery-elvas.org.
Significantly, according to SGP Ward, this was the only time that Wellington and all his Staff were on the same property. After the siege was raised and Wellington and his staff had moved to the Quinta de São João, there was a dramatic cavalry action which was stopped in front of the Monte.
After lunch a visit to Fuerte de San Cristobal. This fort, which resisted Wellington's army's best efforts to capture, has been restored. There will be a free guided tour starting at 1630, followed by a visit to the main breach.
