Description:

Riding for the Disabled, Cascais, operates seven times each week and cares for some seventy physically or mentally handicapped children and young adults. The Association is charitable, and relies solely upon donations and from the subscriptions of the membership (Euros 25.00 per person per annum).

Helpers are always needed at the sessions, and do not need any qualifications, or experience with horses, just their desire to help the children, who love the lessons and benefit greatly from the therapy they receive. Each session has its own group leader (see list below), and helpers can either lead the ponies or walk along beside the rider. A programme for each rider is devised through the co-operation of qualified physiotherapists, therapists, teachers and instructors, and a doctor’s authorisation is required for each pupil, whose progress is monitored at regular intervals. The lessons are held at the Hipódromo Municipal Manuel Possolo in Cascais (next to the Visconde Health Club).

Classes are held during normal school term times, and all morning classes start at 09.30 and go on until approx. noon. The Monday group will recommence on 22nd September, all the other groups will recommence on 30th September.
