Description:

Before the Lisbon Players came into being, their venue, Estrela Hall, was part of the British Hospital which took it over from the Protestant School. In a Church Report of 1891 Canon Pope wrote : "Ever since I came to Lisbon I have desired to establish a Room, which might be used for Lectures, for entertainments of various kinds, for classes, etc."

St. George's Parish Room, the new hall, opened in February 1906, four years after the death of Canon Pope.

In 1941, because of WorldWar II, the Information Department of the British Embassy took over the Estrela Hall to show films and newsreleases that were forbidden by Salazar.

The theatre group Lisbon Players was founded in 1947. It is a group open to people of all nationalities with interests in theatre and theatre skills. Nobody gets paid but everybody agrees that the pleasure of being involved, the friendly atmosphere, the experience they gain and the friends they make are enough reward.

Our past productions have included plays by Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, Beckett, Fernando Pessoa, David Mamet, Oscar Wilde and Steven Berkoff as well as musical productions of 'The Beggar's Opera' and 'Oh What a Lovely War'.
