Description:
The St. Andrew’s Society of Lisbon was founded in 1934 making it a long established fraternal organisation in Portugal. A non-profit making organisation, the St. Andrew’s Society’s aims and objectives encompass promoting, maintaining and extending interest in Scotland and in the Scottish culture and its heritage. To further these ends, the Society organises recreational and cultural events during the year. Special events in recognition of the Patron Saint of Scotland, St. Andrew’s Day, and the Scottish poet, Sir Robert Burns’ birthday, are annually celebrated, with the aim to bring together those of Scottish descent and the community of Lisbon.
In addition the Society has on occasions sponsored specific non-Scottish events. One in recent years was the 2005 Masked Ball. This was a fundraising event in aid of helping victims of the catastrophic events of the December 26, 2004 Tsunami in Thailand. Instead of donating to a general fund, the Society contacted the Bangkok Patana School, the British International School in Thailand and a centre for excellence in education, which was involved in a school project to help with the rebuilding of houses and boats in the village of Pak Weep. The Society raised enough money to build a house and two boats.
