Description:
Allied Joint Command Lisbon has purposefully been designed as a small but robust headquarters that once fully operational will be capable of rapidly deploying anywhere in the NATO area of responsibility and beyond. Once deployed, the headquarters will be capable of providing a sea based command and control element during the initial stages of operations ranging the entire operational spectrum from peacekeeping to war fighting.
Allied Joint Command Lisbon’s uniqueness is partially highlighted in its name. Allied Joint Command Lisbon’s two sister headquarters have been designated Allied Joint Force Command Headquarters Brunssum and Allied Joint Force Command Headquarters Naples. These headquarters have been designated Allied Joint Force Commands because both headquarters are associated with land, maritime and air component commands standing by and ready to conduct operations.
The headquarters in Lisbon has been designated Allied Joint Command Lisbon a smaller and highly mobile headquarters ready to command a force specifically tailored to complete missions at the direction of Allied Command Operations.
The Allied Joint Command Lisbon mounts the sea-based Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF) Headquarters and will exercise Command and Control over the NATO Response Force (NRF) at the operational level on a rotational basis.
Allied Joint Command Lisbon is responsible for:
- The preparation of the staff to command the NRF
- Mounting the sea-based CJTF HQ. (MC 324/1)
- Contributing to stability through cooperation and dialogue under Partnership for Peace (PfP) and Mediterranean Dialogue (MD).
The United Kingdom element of Allied Joint Command Lisbon consists of 46 Tri-service personnel and their families (approximately 100 in total).
Recent History:
2004 - In March 04 CINCSOUTHLANT changed to Allied Joint Command Headquarters Lisbon (Joint HQ Lisbon).
2005 - From 19 October until 8 February 2006, JHQ Lisbon commanded the NATO Disaster Relief Team in Pakistan.
2005 - Since June 2005, Allied Joint Command Lisbon was assigned operational command for the support of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS).
2006 - On 04 December SACEUR rewarded JCL with a Campaign Pennant to recognize the operational contribution during the Pakistan Earthquake Relief Operation.
