WRVS Car Boot Sale May 2009

Opening up the rattly metal cage gates to Carcavelos market is a very potent time. The large open space is quiet and a little windblown at 8.30 in the morning. On Saturday 9th May cars gradually began arriving for the WRVS Car Boot Stall. They were guided into into their 2 lines, to nose away from each other so as to open their carboots onto the central path. Drivers unfolded their tables or laid out their display rugs and brought out their wares. More and more cars arrived. As the morning progressed we started new lines and by 10am there were 74 cars participating. At that time the buying public is allowed in and the selling begins. Rain threatened and some hasty covering up is done for just a few minutes until the heavy clouds pass. Tea was made, a wonderful array of cakes and buns are presented by WRVS members to the sandwich and cake stall. Across the aisle a wide variety of items are donated by many people to the WRVS White Elephant stall for us to sell. The corridor is busy with parents and children, expats and Portuguese looking for bargains and chatting with friends. Lots of books and toys changed hands, along with Christmas decorations and sewing machines, paintings and jewellery, even lamps and lavender plants, scooters and scones. The sun shone at last and summer time was promising to come. Each car owner gave €12 towards this year’s selected charity- O Seculo. One charity minded young lady, Phoebe, had cleared her piggybank, used for her 1,2 and 5 cent pieces, which amounted to €6 and donated it all.

By 2pm all were busy tidying away or giving their unsold items to the representatives from the Lar da Boa Vontade, who will sell them from their own second hand shop in Carcavelos. The residents and staff had been a great help in publicising the event around the community. As the gates were closing the heavens opened and the rain poured at last.

The WRVS would like to thank all the participating sellers and buyers for their contributions and efforts in making the day a great success. Between the teas and food, drinks, white elephant and car pitches we raised over €1746 for O Seculo, to go towards the refurbishment of areas dedicated to the care of victims of domestic violence.

The next WRVS Car Boot Sale will be on Saturday 26th September, again, in Carcavelos Market.
