Report on the Fun & Games Day

The BCC held its Annual Fun & Games Day on the 13th June at St. Julian’s School when €3,000 was raised for Charity. This year the funds raised were split between the British Retirement Home, which is renewing its kitchen and Centro Sagrada Familia, Alges, more commonly known as Sister Agnes Creche.

Unfortunately the only available date for the school was the 13th June, a feriado, following two consecutive feriados and a ponte! Needless to say the number of team entries was lower as half of Lisbon had left for a short break, so the amount raised was well down on the last couple of years.
However, a very enjoyable day was had by all. All teams played Touch Rugby, football, basketball, Lacrosse, volleyball, field hockey and Scottish Country Dancing. Not every team member had to play each game unless they were unlucky to be perhaps the one obligatory female on their team! A scratch team of youngsters, the Big Blue Bank, formed that morning and won the coveted “Fairplay” award. Let us hope they had a reward of ice creams all round from the triple B! The Overall winner was the Lighthouses.

For the third year running the WRVS organised the raffle, this year benefiting from the help of the English Speaking Union. They also organised salads, strawberries and cream and a Tombola. Thanks also go to St. Julian’s School for providing the premises, the International Preparatory School for running the BBQ and all the teams, the numerous referees and judges and above all Tim and Sue Munnion who organise the games which run so smoothly. Finally to Alex Ellis, Her Britannic Majesty’s Ambassador to Portugal, who not only participated in an Embassy team but presented the raffle prizes with great enthusiasm.
